WHY THIS BOOK IS IMPORTANT
According to the Barna Group, 43% of Americans who trust Jesus Christ as their savior do so before reaching age 13. In another survey of 1,000 adults, less than one in five believes that children under age 13 are being “superbly” or “pretty well” prepared spiritually for life.
Bible Animal Tales is written for children age 8 to 12 years. Its design is to offset the secular worldview that children in public schools are exposed to for most of the day, Monday through Friday. For example, the author challenges the assumption that the theory of evolution is a proven fact. She asserts the biblical creationist model as an alternative. Mary Rose also encourages children to exercise their constitutional right to free speech by sharing their Christian faith with classmates when the opportunity presents itself.
The 2004 presidential election demonstrated that Americans are deeply divided over the issue of traditional moral values. Now it is more important than ever to assure that the upcoming generations of Christians will continue to hold and defend those values that are increasingly under attack. All of the stories involve an animal to catch the child’s attention, but the thrust of each story is to teach a significant moral value or to present the gospel. The story about Moses carrying our God’s command to pick up a snake, for instance, illustrates the importance of obeying God, even when He asks us to do something that takes us out of our comfort zone. The story of Absalom and his mule pictures the disastrous result of defying duly constituted authority, especially our parents. Other virtues taught in the book include industry, honesty, humility, faithfulness and service.
Beginning in Genesis and continuing through Revelation, Bible Animal Tales presents a panorama of the Bible’s teaching on sin, salvation, and what it means to live a life pleasing to God. The timeless stories are told with a combination of simplicity and attention to detail along with interesting facts about the featured animal, so that even adults can enjoy them. That is what makes this a great book for family devotions.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Mary Rose Pearson has been an active church worker for most of her life, with a passion for leading children to Christ and grounding them in the faith. In addition, over 600 of her articles, poems, devotions, stories, songs, and children’s activities have been published in various Christian periodicals.
ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR
Kerry Adcock knows firsthand how important it is to teach children moral values. He spends most of his time pursuing and apprehending criminals, who do not heed basic moral values. He is a patrol officer in the Fort Worth, Texas, Police Department.
To relax after a stressful day, he draws children’s cartoons and paints pictures, mostly scenes of Southwest America. His delightful sense of humor gives his cartoons a warm, attractive feeling, even when they depict serious subjects. His giftedness as a serious artist gives his representation of the cartoon animals a striking sense of realism and accuracy.
Kerry carefully researched the geographical, historical and cultural background of each illustration. Though they are cartoons, they are scrupulously accurate in the way they depict architecture, furniture, clothing, plants and topography.
